It’s the most wonderful time of the year, now that Christmas and a Brand new year is just around the corner, it’s time for public spaces all over the country to crank their stereos up, as a result of this you’ll need the perfect soundtrack to get you in the festive spirit. There’s so many to choose from but, when it comes to ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, it’s all about the big hitters.
In no particular order this article will feature a countdown of top 10 Christmas and New Year songs.
1. Feliz Navidad by JOSÈ FELICIANO
This Bi-lingual holiday Classic was written by the Puerto-Rican singer/song writer José Feliciano in 1970, it comprises of a Spanish chorus “Feliz Navidad pròspero año felicidad” which translates into English as “Merry Christmas, a prosperous year and happiness” and also an equally simple English verse “I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart”, it has become a classic Christmas pop song in the United States, throughout the Spanish-speaking world and internationally.
2. Jingle Bell Bell by TUNDE EDNUT
Tunde Ednut brings humor to the holidays with his single titled “Jingle bell bell”. The afrobeat tune features M.I, Orezi and Falz. This track is said to have yearly instalments with different artists hence this is one holiday jam to look forward to.
3. Santa Tell Me by ARIANA GRANDE
“Santa, tell me if you’re really theredon’t make me fall in love again if he won’t be here next year”. This song was released on Nov 24 2014 on Grande’s Christmas EP titled “Christmas kisses”, this song which has a jazz feel to it will totally make you catch feelings.
4. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey
Ah Mariah, the Christmas fairy with a vocal range so high she can probably communicate with bats, LOL. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is asong written and produced by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey and composer Walter Afanasieff. It was released on 1 November 1994 as the lead single for Mariah’s first holiday album and fourth studio album, “Merry Christmas”. In 2010, Carey re-recorded the song for a second holiday album, “Merry Christmas II You”, titled “All I Want for Christmas Is You (Extra Festive)”. The following yearshe recorded another version titled “All I Want for Christmas for You (Super Festive!)”, a duet with Justin Bieber for his 2011 album, under the Mistletoe. Since its initial release, the song has also been covered by many artists over the years, including Shania Twain,Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Cee Lo Green, Idina Menzel and Fifth Harmony and it has also been reported that it has been awarded 50 million in royalties over the years. Talk about a ball buster.
5. Mistletoe by Justin Bieber
Mistletoe is a Christmas song by Canadian pop star Justin Bieber. The song was released on October 17, 2011 as the lead single from his Christmas album, “Under the Mistletoe, (2011)”. Mistletoe is a pop and R&B song that has reggae influences. This song is for all the lovers out there, make sure you all kiss under the Mistletoe.
6. Odun Nlo Sopin by C. A. C GOOD WOMEN CHOIR
This song is a yearly Christmas Jam in an average Nigerian home. It’s like an unwritten constitution to know and play the song. Led by Mrs. D. A. Fasoyin, C.A.C Good Women group released the best Christmas and New Year song titled ‘Odun Nlo Sopin’ in Nigeria many years ago, probably before I was born though; but all that matters is I heard the song and I still know it.
7. We Wish You A Merry Christmas by ANONYMOUS
“Good tidings we bring to you and your kin, good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year”. The author and composer of this song is said to be untraceable, however it is believed to date back to England in the sixteenth century. The tradition of carolers being given Christmas treats for singing to wealthy members of the community is reflected in this Christmas song.
8. Silent Night by JOSEPH MOHR
Silent Night is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xavier Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers from every music genre, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the third best-selling single of all-time.
9. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
Santa Claus Is Coming to Town is a Christmas Song, written by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie and was first sung on Eddie Cantor’s radio show in November 1934. It became an instant hit with orders for 500,000 copies of sheet music and more than 30,000 records sold within 24 hours. The song has been covered by over 200 artists, including The Crystals, Mariah Carey, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra and The Jackson 5
10. Silent Night by WAJE
Waje’s ‘Silent night’ which was produced by Mystr ushers us into the season of festivities with her rendition of ‘Silent night’. The singer gives the traditional Christmas carol an interesting twist which features a fusion of sounds reminiscent of classic highlife music and church choruses. Who would have thought one would ever find themselves “komole-ing” to this carol.
